It took a lot of effort, but early in July it was decided that Benelux 2021 would go ahead after all. Despite the late announcement, 14 die-hards showed up, and they did not complain: this was a super edition! A 3/4 BFT on Saturday (to get used to it) and a 4/5 BFT on Sunday, combined with the typical waves and a beautiful sunshine made this the ideal scenario for the big water Finn sailors. The long duration and the firm conditions made this once again the Paris-Roubaix of Finn sailing.
On Saturday, Sigurd, Tobias De Haer and Maarten Godschalx competed for the win. The pump flag was usually up which made it extra tiring. It was always very exciting with changing positions and boats that were very close to each other.
On Sunday there was more wind, Wim loved this and sailed a 1 and two 2s. Chris Frijdal sailed very strong and he won thanks to his consistency. Sigurd was disappointed: the race committee had shortened the course and he was far above the layline. This did cost him the podium.
Mark Geboes, Jos Strijckers and Bjorn Cotteleer sailed their first Benelux and they did very well on this difficult water. Hopefully this will taste like more.
