The corona made for a difficult and dubious start. The first year since 2014 that we have no foreigners at the start of an OBK. Nevertheless, 19 Belgians were at the start. And knowing that some regulars did not show up. We keep on growing and that’s a pleasure!
The club house of NLM could not be used by the Finn-sailors, but the alternative was Harry, who made his chip shop available. We ourselves tried to keep some distance, avoid handshakes and fortunately we are outdoor sportsmen. So in that sense we are Covid-proof.
Day 1 was very promising. 8-16kn wind. Something for everyone. Yves Bassette surprises friend and foe as a newcomer by being the first to arrive at the upper barrel in the first series. Frederik Boone, with a boat of 1500 Euros, regularly came to challenge many a trusted Finn-sailor. Chapeau. Joris Verheulpen, also a newcomer, predicted to be the red lantern of the fleet, but was able to blend into the tail of the pack from time to time. Local Jos Strijckers, for whom we moved our circus to the Limburg to boost the promotion of our boat there, is also sailing and fighting in the back. Taking part is important to learn quickly and to steal the limelight! You have undoubtedly learned a lot and have acquired a taste for it!
We sailed 5 series, 6 were planned. The wind started to turn and it would take a long time to change the course to be able to start again. Moreover, everyone had exhausted their energy reserves and the committee decided to stop for day 1.
Everyone is almost euphoric when they leave the water: “what a day”, “great”, “awesome”, … Just think of some more superlatives. They were applicable. Fulfilled, we enjoy an evening of frying. It is something different. In the end, you make the atmosphere yourself. There was a lot of chatter about sails and ropes…
The intermediate score was very exciting. For example, 3 people in 3rd place, 1 point behind 2nd place, and even lower in the rankings there were several ex aequos. A lot could still happen. Sigurd had a good lead, but could certainly not drop 2 stitches. Five races were planned, but alas. The wind was absent. One race could still be completed.
Sigurd confirmed his form and became champion. Filip Willems also knows his come back in Finn-sailing. As Lengend he shows that he was not that Finnish promise for nothing. So happy and proud to have you Filip !
Mattysse Cattrysse, the youngest of the gang, also clearly shows that with some training he could become a candidate champion in the years to come. He now finishes just third after Wim Henderieckx and Sigurd Vergauwe.
Harelbeke missed one or two podium places by a hair. It was a sporty and very nice race! Next year or the next race we will have a sportive revenge.
Oh, our game is fun!
Also a word of thanks to the jury who kept a tight rein on the water !
